The Ingres Series (1989-1995) - When I decided to do the Ingres pieces, I wondered if I would be able to achieve the refinement of his paintings. The shapes I chose for these paintings came about through the use of automatic drawing; getting into a meditative state and letting the pencil go where it chose. Once the shape of the canvas was chosen I found images from Ingres to play off the canvas shape. In these paintings the eye never rests. It slides over the edge of the canvas and then onto the curves in the in the images in the paintings and remains constantly in motion.
